The splintering of the great powers into mini-states throughout the mid to late 21st century and the wave of new plagues that swept the world in the 22nd gave birth to a new world, one desperate for order and security. James Pilgrim is a top Mission Operative for Imperial Special Services, a clandestine troubleshooting agency of the empire that governs the western half of the North American continent. He is also one of the Emperor's Own Orphans, a group of men and women recruited while still children from some of the urban hell-holes that blight the eastern half of the continent, and most of the world. As a group, they are considered adopted members of the royal family, and exist to serve the Government and protect the Succession. As individuals, they serve wherever best suited, and Pilgrim has served in elite special operations forces as well as an undercover agent for the ISS.
But a new mission is destined to rock the foundations of his personal world and pit his almost pathological devotion to duty against his deep attachment to the Princess Victoria. To complete his mission as it is given to him could doom her to a miserable, loveless marriage, though it would also provide the empire with a strategic alliance. To resolve the conflict tearing him apart, he will have to do things no Orphan has ever done, risking his life and honor to save both his empire and his beloved. And his only ally will be Victoria herself, 5,000 miles away.
As he struggles to complete his mission in London, the capital of the corporate-fascist Confederation of North Sea States, Victoria will have to navigate the tricky and confusing maze of politics in New Camelot and San Francisco. Though James must deal with the thuggish security police of a thoroughly oppressed people, it is Victoria that will have to deal with the absolutely unthinkable specter of a possible traitor within her own family. The underpinnings of their young empire—perhaps mankind's last hope for a stable government that can stave off a descent into a new Dark Age—is at stake. And their own happiness may be the price they have to pay.
“The Pilgrim Initiative” is the first volume of a trilogy of trilogies-- 9 books-- that will chronicle the rise and fall of the Empire of Free Humanity as it rises from a corner of North America to the moon, the planets, and beyond. The next volume, “The Pilgrim Covenant,” will arrive in early 2017.
